While the overarching theme for Earth Day 2025 is "Our Power, Our Planet,” which focuses on renewable energy, Earth Day Canada’s 2025 campaign is all about biodiversity protection. The campaign invites you to discover the biodiversity around you and to learn more about some of Canada’s endangered species through its biodiversity seek and find game.
As we celebrate Earth Day 2025, the Canadian Forage and Grassland Association (CFGA) invites everyone to reflect on the vital role grasslands play in safeguarding biodiversity. Grasslands are home to an array of plant and animal species, many of which are critical to the health and balance of the environment and some of which are threatened or endangered.
Biodiversity in grasslands provides essential ecological services. Pollinators, such as bees and butterflies, ensure crop productivity, while birds and small mammals contribute to pest control and seed dispersal. The diverse plant species in grasslands improve soil structure, filter water and support carbon sequestration.
Sustainable grassland management practices, such as planting native forage species and adopting rotational grazing, are key strategies for preserving biodiversity while benefiting agricultural productivity. Protecting biodiversity is not only about conserving species, it’s about maintaining the resilience of ecosystems that sustain agriculture, mitigate climate change and provide clean water.
That is why on Earth Day, and every day, the CFGA recognizes the efforts of farmers, researchers and conservationists who work together to preserve and protect grasslands and the life they support.
