The Canadian Forage and Grassland Association (CFGA) held its annual general meeting to report on activities during the 2024-2025 fiscal year. Executive director Cedric MacLeod kicked off the meeting with introductions to the board of directors and more than 30 contractors and staff who support these activities.
Cedric also presented the annual update which provided an overview of all CFGA projects. This was followed by updates on completed and new projects and a presentation of the association’s March 31, 2024 Audited Financial Statements.
Projects
The CFGA wrapped up one project in the 2024-2025 fiscal. The six-year Habitat and Biodiversity Assessment Tool (HBAT) project saw launches of province-specific, online tools in provinces across the country. The $1.2-million project began in 2020 with financial support from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) as part of the Canada Nature Fund.
The new projects started in 2024-2025 are Tomorrow’s Prairies and the Grassland Learning and Knowledge Hub (GLKH) Projects.
The CFGA is working with Nature United on Tomorrow’s Prairies, a three-year project that builds on the CFGA’s previous work on grassland inventories and biodiversity. Funded by ECCC’s Nature Smart Climate Solutions Fund, the project is studying historical baselines and projections of Canadian grasslands, fostering collaboration among scientists and practitioners, developing key indicators and modelling future scenarios of change.
The Grassland Learning and Knowledge Hub (GLKH) is a partnership between the University of Alberta, Canadian Forage and Grassland Association, Ducks Unlimited Canada and the Restore Assert Defend (RAD) Network. The five-year project also received funding from ECCC’s Nature Smart Climate Solutions Fund and will address natural climate solutions implementation and research gaps by analyzing barriers to reducing grasslands conversion and increasing restoration, with an emphasis on policy and the social sciences. On March 25, 2025 the GLKH hosted an official launch event, you can watch the recording here.
The recording of the annual meeting is available on the CFGA resource video library page in English and French.
