Welcome to the CFGA

Since its incorporation in March 2010, the Canadian Forage and Grassland Association / Canadienne pour les Plantes Fourragères has been providing a national voice for all Canadians who produce hay and forage products and for those whose production is dependent upon forage/grassland production. Its founding directors represent a broad cross section of the industry; forage and livestock producers, provincial forage & grassland associations, processors, forage and grassland user groups (dairy, beef, equine and sheep), and representatives from the provincial and federal government. By working as a team, we can respond to issues on a national level and effectively initiate projects that address production issues, new technology, trade barriers etc.

Supporting our Livestock Industry

Our high quality hay is a staple for livestock producers across Canada. Our excellent weather conditions and our abundance of fresh water, clean air and fertile soil lends itself to the production of the highest quality hay in the world. Several types of forage are produced in Canada, including bromes, fescues, timothy, alfalfa, clover and orchard grass. Our production supports the dairy, beef, sheep and horse industry domestically and abroad.

Premier Forage Supplier

Canada is a premier supplier of hay, straw and forage products for use both domestically and internationally. There are approximately 36 million hectares (ha) of forage used for livestock grazing and the production of forage crops in Canada. 72 percent of production is native range (26 million ha), 11 percent is cultivated pasture (4 million ha) and 17 percent is forage crops (6 million ha).Canada exports approximately 600,000 tonnes of forage product annually valued at $150 million, primarily to United States and Asia, with emerging markets in the Middle East and Mexico. Our primary exports are timothy and alfalfa; timothy tends to be exported in a baled or double compressed form while alfalfa is exported in bales, cubes and pellets. Forage Land Use in Canada

Our mission is to promote the growth of the forage and grassland sector by advocating a sustainable and environmentally friendly industry.

This includes research and development, market development and innovation to enhance the industry’s ability to profitably produce and offer superior products to our producers, and domestic and international consumers.
